Breast implant surgery or breast augmentation is designed to improve proportions and overall appearance. Dr. Davidson, one of Boston, Massachusetts' most experienced cosmetic breast augmentation surgeons, uses the latest techniques to achieve the best possible result. Through a small incision, saline filled breast implants or silicone gel breast implants are inserted behind the breasts. The pros and cons of both types of breast implants will be reviewed with you at your consultation visit. The breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis and takes less than one hour for both breast implants to be inserted.

In contrast to most plastic surgeons, Dr. Davidson does not cut or "release" the pectoral muscles where they attach to the breast bone or sternum. He stretches the muscle to provide room for the breast implants, thereby preserving muscle strength. Dr. Davidson's personal technique for breast augmentation was published in a 1997 Aesthetic Surgery Journal. He was also asked to share his technique for breast augmentation with his colleagues by contributing the breast implant portion of the 1998 Aesthetic Video Journal Volume. This instructional video is a publication of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

At your consultation visit, you will have the opportunity to try on a variety of breast implant sizes in a bra; this gives you a preview of your approximate post-operative size. If your breasts are sagging or noticeably different from one another, the option of a breast lift or shaping procedure will also be discussed, in addition to the breast augmentation discussion.

How to Select the Best Breast Implant Size When Planning Breast Augmentation Surgery

Second only in importance to obtaining the most natural appearance following breast augmentation, is selecting the best size breast implant. Because individual women vary so widely in height, weight, chest or rib cage size and other anatomic issues such as hip, buttock and shoulder size, the best size for one person will not necessarily be the best size for someone else.

In Dr. Davidson's opinion, the best way to select breast implant volume is to place a variety of different sized trial implants in a bra during the pre-op consultation visit and evaluate oneself in a mirror. Inviting a close friend or relative to accompany you for this visit may be helpful but is not required.

Many patients share the same conflicting concerns. On the one hand, they don't want everyone to notice. On the other, they want to be sure they select a large enough implant so that they don't have to return for larger breast implants at a future time. Fortunately, Dr. Davidson's extensive experience in breast augmentation enables him and his staff to offer helpful advice so that the size implant used will look both attractive and natural after surgery.

Many women have one breast that is noticeably larger and lower than the other. In these cases Dr. Davidson will often consider a larger implant on the smaller side to improve volume symmetry.

Finally, most patients prefer Dr. Davidson to "fine tune" their breast implant sizing during surgery since the most accurate sizing determination can be made when the surgery is in progress and the implants are placed behind your own tissue.
