Breast
lift or mastopexy is an operation designed to elevate and
shape sagging or asymmetrical breasts. The nipples and surrounding
pigmented skin (areola ) are usually elevated to a more
optimal level and excess breast skin is removed. If the
size of the nipple and areola is too large, it may be made
smaller.
The
two types of breast lift which Dr. Davidson performs most
often are the peri areolar lift ( which requires only a
single circular scar around the nipple/ areola) and the
classical or inverted T technique, which permits more excess
skin to be removed. At your consultation visit, Dr. Davidson
will recommend the technique which is best suited to your
individual needs.
Dr.
Davidson published an original article in the Journal Plastic
and Reconstructive Surgery describing his technique for
reducing excess breast skin using a concentric circle or
donut skin removal.

Breast
lift may be desired because of changes related to pregnancy
when the breast skin is stretched and the breast weight
is greater, or it may be requested because of sagging caused
by aging, weight loss or jogging. Those women having larger
heavier breasts have a greater likelihood of sagging during
their lifetime.

Some
women prefer the larger fuller breasts which they had while
pregnant. For these patients, breast lift and breast augmentation
with implants may be performed at a single operation.
Other
women desire breast lift and shaping to improve breast asymmetry
(different size or different shaped breasts). In these patients,
a breast lift or reduction may be considered on the larger/lower
side, while a breast enlargement with or without lifting
may be helpful on the smaller side.
