Breast reduction surgery ( reduction mammoplasty ) is designed to improve the appearance and comfort of women whose breasts are disproportionately large and sagging. Typically, the procedure reduces the breast size to one which is appropriate for that person while reducing or eliminating sagging. The incisions, which are concealed by a bra or bathing suit, are longer than those for a breast enlargement but generally fade with time. To obtain maximum accuracy, careful measurements and markings are made on the skin prior to surgery. The procedure is then carried out under general anesthesia. After surgery, most patients report less discomfort than they had anticipated.

Scarless breast reduction is an option for the majority of women seeking reduction mammaplasty. Enough fatty tissue can usually be removed by liposuction that breast size can be reduced one or two cup sizes. The advantage of this technique is the elimination of almost all surgical scars, less discomfort and a return to most activities in only a few days. There may also be little or no change in sensation and ability to breast feed. The trade off is less precise breast shaping and nipple positioning.
