The tumescent technique consists of injecting the fatty tissues with a generous volume of a saline like solution, which also contains xylocaine a local anesthetic, plus a medication which causes the blood vessels to constrict. The tumescent injection is done before fat removal begins. This important advance facilitates the removal of much larger volumes of fat while greatly reducing blood loss.
